Bartholomew's Children

Little is known about Catherine other than she is listed in the Indiana County land deeds in order to distribute her portion of inheritance, after her father’s death. In these deeds she is not listed as intermarried with anyone nor is she listed as deceased, therefore Catherine must have been single and living at the time of the land sales.

Agnes is quite the complex child.

It is believed she was born about 1785 in Guilford Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania as her father is recorded as living in Guilford in 1786 per the Guilford Tax records for 1786 and in the 1860 census her place of birth is listed as Franklin County, which is where Guilford Township is located.

There are differing thoughts on Agnes and her life. Many who research the Hadden family believe she and her brother Archibald were raised by a relative (perhaps an aunt) named Agnes Taggart in West Chester, Pennsylvania from 1784-1800.

The deeds to disperse her father’s property after his death lists her as intermarried with James Daughterty. Therefore, Agnes must have been married to James during this time period and James must have been living in 1830.

Agnes shows up in the 1850 census as Agnes Dougherty, age 70, living with her brother James Hadden and his wife, Rebecca and their children, in White Township, Indiana County. This census was taken on 2 Aug 1850. It can be assumed that Agnes’ husband James died before the 1850 census (she is 70 during this census).

In 1860 Agnes is counted on two separate census. The first location is with her nephew, George Hadden and his wife Mary (Shank) with their two children. Her age is “76” on census which was taken on 4 June 1860 in White Township, Indiana County (Post office is city of Indiana). The other census taken on 20 July 1860 shows her as age “75” and living with her brother James and his wife Rebecca again in Cherryhill Township, Indiana County (Post office is Penn Run).

In the 1870 census she is still living with her brother James. This census lists her as age “86” and was taken on 29 June 1870 of Cherryhill Township in Indiana County (Post office is Penn Run).

Per Agnes’ obituary in the Indiana Messenger on 20 Sep 1871, she passed away on 8 Sep 1871. “Daugherty – On the 8th inst, of consumption, Mrs. Agnes Daughterty , of Greenville, Cherryhill tp, aged 86 years – Deceased was the oldest inhabitant of the village and was universally loved and respected by all who knew her. ” (Edited 5 Feb 2023 to reflect newly discovered obituary)

She never remarried after her husband, James, died and always lived with family for the remainder of her life. The only records found to associate Agnes with her husband, James Dougherty, are the deeds for the sale of her father’s land after his death. It is unknown if they had any children together. Jane was born about 1786 in Guilford Township, Franklin County, PA. Just like her sister, Catharine, little is known about her. Jane is first mentioned in the Indiana County land deeds to distribute her portion of inheritance after her father’s death. In these deeds she is listed as intermarried with Robert Adams and “since dead with lawful issue”. Therefore, she must have died during or before the year 1830. It is believed she is the second wife of Robert.

Outside of these deeds, no further records have been found on Jane and her husband, Robert Adams.

Although, Robert is most likely the son of Gawin and Nancy Adams (Irwin). As in his mother’s will she directly mentions her daughter, Polly (Mary) who is intermarried with Bartholomew’s son Archibald; her daughter Jane who is intermarried with Bartholomew’s son William. Nancy did not list the names of her son’s wives in her will, however if two of her daughter’s were married to son’s of Bartholomew, it would not be unusual for her sons to marry a daughter of Bartholomew.

William was born in 1788 in Cherry Run, Center Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and died 24 Aug 1874 in Cherryhill Township, Indiana County, PA.

His grandson, William J. Hadden (offspring of his son Gawin Hadden), was interviewed for the book “History of Indiana County, Pennsylvania 1745-1800” by John Alexander, 1880, and his interview is the basis for many of the facts as they pertain to the Bartholomew Hadden line. Within this interview, it is noted that William J. Hadden Sr, was “born in this country in 1788, near Cherry Run, in Centre Township and died in 1872 in Cherry Hill Township.” It is important to note that an obituary ran in the Indiana Messenger on 21 Oct 1874 that said “HADDEN- On the 24th of August, 1874, William Hadden, Sr., of Cherry Hill tp., aged 86 years. The deceased was a resident of the township for 49 years, and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his death.”

In 1789 his father, Bartholomew, lived in the 1st District, 9th Division of Armstrong Township in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania per the Pennsylvania Tax and Exoneration record of 1768-1801 and the Pennsylvania, U.S. Direct Tax Lists, 1789.  Bartholomew owned 300 acres at this time. It is most likely that William’s father lived in this same location when William was born in 1788.

The middle initial of “J” for both William Sr. and William Jr. comes from the above-mentioned entry in Alexander’s book. The author refers to the son as William J. Hadden during his personal interview with him. In addition, an article on William’s son regarding William J. Hadden Jr. as a school director for Cherryhill Township shows a middle initial as “J.”  As the majority of the records for both Williams shows either a Jr. or a Sr., the assumption is made that both men carry identical names, allowing for the Jr. or Sr. designation.

Before 7 Aug 1820 William married Jane Adams (daughter of Gawin & Nancy Adams) as the 1820 Census shows him living in Washington Township, Indiana County with 6 household members.  In 1830 he is living in Green Township, Indiana County with a total of 7 household members.  In 1840 he is living in Greene Township, Indiana County with 7 household members.  He is still living in Greene Township in the 1850 Census with his wife, his son William/wife Mary and their family.

He died 24 Aug 1874 per his probated will.

Alexander was born abt. 1793 most likely in Armstrong Township, Westmoreland County, PA; as his brother, Bartholomew was born in 1796 in Armstrong Township and their father, Bartholomew, is on the 1790 Census record for Armstrong Township and is still living in Armstrong in 1798, per the tax record.

Alexander first shows up in public record in property deeds after his father’s death. When Bartholomew Hadden died and his property was handed down to his children in 1828, most of his children turned around and sold the property. These deeds list the names of every child of Bartholomew (and their spouses). These deeds are dated 1829-1833 and each of the deeds clearly state the children of Bartholomew. It is from these deeds that we know Alexander’s wife’s name is Nancy

Alexander and Nancy lived in Washington Township for the 1830 Census, Green Township for the 1840 Census, White Township for the 1850 Census. Alexander and his family have not been located in the 1860 Census

Alexander’s date of death is not sourced and with not being able to locate him in the 1860 Census, his death is listed as after 1850.

Per the 1850 US Federal Census, Bartholomew was born about 1796; most likely in Armstrong Township, Westmoreland County, PA as his father is on the 1798 US Tax list living in this location.

On the census taken on 24 Aug 1850 in Perry Township, Jefferson County, PA; he is listed with his brother, Archibald and his family. Bartholomew is 54 time at the time of the census and is listed as having the condition of “idiot”. The family was living in Perry at the time in dwelling number 582. John Bell, the first resident of Perry Township, is listed as family number 581 and Archibald’s son, Samuel (and his family) are listed on the same census as family number 593.

The “condition” column in the 1850 census was used to explain any anomalies of family members. Specifically, the census taker asked the head of the household if any family members were deaf and dumb, blind, insane or idiotic.

In the 1840 census for his siblings William, Archibald and Samuel, there are no marks for a male between 40-50 years of age. Therefor, we can conclude Bartholomew was not living with his brothers William, Archibald or Samuel in 1840 as he would have been about 44 years of age. However, his brother James is listed as having one free white male, 40-49, living in his residence. James was 40 in 1840, so this could be a mark for James and not for Bartholomew. In 1850 Bartholomew is listed as living with his brother Archibald in Perry Township in Jefferson County. He is listed as age 54.

Further research has not located Bartholomew on any census records for 1860 or 1870 and as such his date of death is listed as bef. 1860.

James was born on 13 July 1800 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Most likely the municipality he was born in was Armstrong Township as his father is listed as living in the Armstrong Township on 1 Oct 1798 in the Pennsylvania US Direct Tax List, 1798.

Sometime before 1823 James married Rebecca A. McCall, who is the daughter of William McCall and Jane Brady. Rebecca was about 20 years old at the time of their marriage. The date of their marriage is based off of their first-born child with the assumption they were married at the time of the birth. Currently there are no records to support their marriage, other than census records that list both in the same household and Rebecca’s last name changed to Hadden.

In 1830 James is living in Greene Township, Indiana County with his family of 7 (including his wife and himself). He is still living in Greene Township in 1840 but his family has increased by 2 with a total of 10 members counted. With the 1850 Census he is living in White Township in Indiana County with a total family count of 8, including his sister Agnes. By the 1860 Census he is living in Cherryhill in Indiana County at the age of 60. Within his household for this census is his wife, Rebecca (59), sister Agnes (75), Son William (37), daughter Catharine (28), son Samuel (25), daughter Eliza (22), daughter Margaret (20).
James’ wife, Rebecca passed away in 1867.
In 1870 the US Census shows James is still residing in Cherryhill Township with his family.

James died on 23 April 1874 in Cherryhill Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania and is buried in the Harmony Cemetery in Penn Run in the same county.

The headstone of James and his wife reads:

James
July 13 1800
Apr 13 1874
Rebecca his wife
Aug 5 1801
May 10 1867
